Transform the EMBA Experience

Welcome to the frontier of educational innovation where Income|Outcome simulations are reshaping the landscape of EMBA programs. Discover a tool designed to introduce students to faculty (and vice versa!), initiate team-building, and make your opening residency activities both engaging and meaningful.

Kickstart the Journey with Engaging Introductory Activities

Embarking on an EMBA program is more than just a step; it’s a giant leap into a world brimming with opportunities for growth and learning. Yet, it’s perfectly natural for it to be accompanied by a symphony of butterflies in the stomach. This is where the magic of the Income|Outcome simulation comes into play: it’s the ultimate ice-breaker and team builder and it goes beyond just fun and games.

Unlike run-of-the-mill team-building exercises, the Income|Outcome simulation immerses teams in a challenging and entirely relevant business environment, where students are encouraged to work together to solve real-world business problems. It’s team-building with a purpose, a contextual relevance that enhances the camaraderie.

By diving head-first into business strategies through a simulation, students can shake off their fears of returning to the academic world. It’s not just about breaking the ice; it’s about melting away those back-to-school jitters. It’s a fearless start to their EMBA journey and it sets a positive and harmonious tone for the adventures that lie ahead in the EMBA program.

Overcoming the Fear of Finance

Finance is often perceived as a complex subject, and it can be a source of anxiety for many. Amanda Thompson is the finance faculty for the long-established EMBA program at Purdue University as well as the new EMBA program at University of Colorado Denver. She   emphasizes that this fear often stems from a lack of exposure to basic principles combined with a lack of experience that is needed to build confidence. The Income|Outcome simulations demystify the financial landscape, breaking down intricate concepts into digestible modules, thereby turning fear into understanding and paving the way for students to embrace financial literacy as a tool for success, rather than a hurdle.

After a 4-hour workshop, the delta in results from pre- and post-workshop surveys are dramatic.

Recent survey results from an EMBA finance class utilizing the business simulation echo Thompson’s sentiments, with participants highlighting the value of visual and interactive elements in understanding accounting concepts.

We asked students about their comfort level explaining and interpreting financial statements. Before the workshop, only 33% of students were comfortable explaining and interpreting a company’s financial statements. After the workshop, over 80% of students said they felt comfortable- with financial statements and terminology.

Alleviating the Fear of Returning to School

Returning to a structured learning environment can be overwhelming for many. The simulations foster a supportive and collaborative learning space where participants can ease into the academic rhythm at a comfortable pace. Amanda shares, “A working knowledge of finance empowers individuals across an organization to make decisions, whether large or small, that add value and improve the performance of the operation and its products and services, in the end improving the standard of living for us all!” It is a gentle reintroduction to the academic world, where the focus is on collaborative growth rather than competitive pressure.

High engagement trades Fear of Finance for fear of the game’s competitive market.

The Problem: ‘Back to School’ Jitters

The return to school can be traumatic for working professionals. If they have been ‘out of school’ for more than a few years, they come into the program anxious about gaps in their knowledge and how well they’ll perform in a rigorous college program. In a cohort composed of EMBA candidates with varied professional backgrounds there will be some students that lack confidence in their financial acumen and may struggle to keep up.

Pre-program math and accounting classes can be useful tools… but Income|Outcome provides a different approach.

We surveyed EMBA students after a 3 hour Simulation

  • 89% were now comfortable going back to school
  • 93% of participants viewed the program as a great icebreaker
  • 85% feel they can identify team member strengths and weaknesses
  • 91% feel their business acumen is improved

Simplify Finance for Diverse Backgrounds

EMBA programs often cater to individuals from a myriad of backgrounds. Income|Outcome doesn’t just reset the starting line; it elevates everyone’s game, refreshing business basics and filling in the gaps of existing business skills. It offers non-business individuals a positive and enriching business experience. It engages non-profit individuals in a spirited, fight-for-profit game, thereby resetting the bar for business acumen and understanding. And it refreshes the fundamentals for business professionals, clearing away some complex business models that have developed over time.
